How to Replace the Ignition Coils in a 2003 Ford F-250

In 1999, Ford released an all-new, heavy-duty version of the F-250 -- the F-250 Super Duty. In 2000, Ford eliminated the standard-duty F-250 and offered only the F-250 Super Duty. The 2003 Ford F-250 Super Duty had a total of five engines available. The two gasoline engines -- a 5.4-liter V-8 and a 6.8-liter V-10 -- came with a distributorless ignition system. This system had a coil pack on each spark plug, instead of having a distributor cap and wires to deliver electricity to the spark plugs. Despite the complexity of the distributorless system, replacing the coil packs on the 2003 F-250 is a straightforward process.

Instructions

    1

Find the coil packs on either side of the top of the engine, just above the valve covers -- the 5.4-liter has eight coil packs and the 6.8-liter has ten coil packs.

    2

Press the locking button on the wiring harness plugging into the top of the coil pack and pull the harness from the coil pack.

    3

Remove the coil pack-retaining bolt, using a ratchet and socket, and pull the coil pack upward with a slight twisting motion to remove it.

    4

Coat the inside of the new coil pack's rubber boot -- on the base of the coil pack -- with dielectric grease. Set the coil pack on the spark plug and press it down until you feel it click into place.

    5

Tighten the coil pack-retaining bolt to 4 to 5 foot-pounds, using a torque wrench and socket. Plug the wiring harness into the top of the coil pack and listen for it to click into place.

    6

Repeat Steps 2 through 5 to replace additional coil packs.
