In 1999, Ford released an all-new, heavy-duty version of the F-250 -- the F-250 Super Duty. In 2000, Ford eliminated the standard-duty F-250 and offered only the F-250 Super Duty. The 2003 Ford F-250 Super Duty had a total of five engines available. The two gasoline engines -- a 5.4-liter V-8 and a 6.8-liter V-10 -- came with a distributorless ignition system. This system had a coil pack on each spark plug, instead of having a distributor cap and wires to deliver electricity to the spark plugs. Despite the complexity of the distributorless system, replacing the coil packs on the 2003 F-250 is a straightforward process.
Instructions
- 1
Find the coil packs on either side of the top of the engine, just above the valve covers -- the 5.4-liter has eight coil packs and the 6.8-liter has ten coil packs.
2Press the locking button on the wiring harness plugging into the top of the coil pack and pull the harness from the coil pack.
3Remove the coil pack-retaining bolt, using a ratchet and socket, and pull the coil pack upward with a slight twisting motion to remove it.
4Coat the inside of the new coil pack's rubber boot -- on the base of the coil pack -- with dielectric grease. Set the coil pack on the spark plug and press it down until you feel it click into place.
5Tighten the coil pack-retaining bolt to 4 to 5 foot-pounds, using a torque wrench and socket. Plug the wiring harness into the top of the coil pack and listen for it to click into place.
6Repeat Steps 2 through 5 to replace additional coil packs.
