The Dodge Grand Caravan was first introduced in 1987 as a longer version of the Caravan. All three two-wheel drive models of the 2003 Grand Caravan came equipped with either a 3.3-liter overhead valve V-6 engine or OHV Flex-Fuel V-6 engine, capable of producing 180 horsepower. An optional 3.8-liter V-6 was available for the 2003 Grand Caravan Sport and the all-wheel drive models. The steps to replace the ignition coil are the same between the two engine sizes. The 2003 Grand Caravan engines are both distributorless engines, controlled by a powertrain control module. The PCM controls the engine and the transmission.
Instructions
- 1
Raise the hood on the Grand Caravan and set the hood prop. Disconnect the negative battery cable with a ratchet and socket. Place a tab of tape on each of the wires protruding from the ignition coil. The coil is just behind the intake manifold. Mark the tape on the wires corresponding with numbers on the ignition coil pack, using a black marker. Remove the coil wires from the coil completely. Disconnect the electrical connector to the ignition coil by hand.
2Remove the coil pack fasteners with a ratchet and socket. Remove the coil pack from the engine compartment.
3Install the new coil pack and tighten the mounting bolts until snug. Turn each bolt 1/2-turn farther, to acquire the 9 foot-pounds of proper torque on the bolts. Install the electrical connector onto the new coil. Install the coil wires in the exact position they came off the old coil.
4Reconnect the negative battery cable, and tighten the tie-down nut until it is snug. Turn the nut 1/2-turn more to achieve the proper 9 foot-pounds, or 108 inch-pounds of torque.
