How to Remove Scuff Marks on the Bumper of a Trans Am

Trans Am bumpers were made using urethane plastic painted to match each car. Occasionally, when one car bumps into another, there is not always a scratch, but often paint is transferred from one car to another. Removing such scuffs does not require sanding or repainting, but simply buffing it out using a specialized rubbing compound. Revitalize your scuffed bumper with some common supplies and a little elbow grease, and have your Trans Am looking new in no time.

Instructions

    1

Wrap a sheet of 2000 grit wet/dry sand paper around a block and sand the area of the scuff lightly until the scratch marks have faded.

    2

Apply an amount of rubbing compound, about the size of a nickle, to a soft cloth then rub it into the site of the scuff on the bumper. The rubbing compound is made up or microscopic abrasives that will polish down the clear coat and paint to remove and disguise the scuff marks.

    3

Buff the site of the scuff mark using an electric oscillating buffing wheel to brighten the site of the scuff and blend it in to the rest of the bumper. Do not spend too much time buffing, as the wheel of the buffer can remove paint if used too long. Be especially careful along edges or high points.

    4

Hand-buff the site of the scuff following the buffing wheel, then apply wax or other top coats as you would under normal conditions.
