How to Fix a Noisy Power Steering Box

Fixing a noisy power steering box is necessary to keep your vehicle under proper control. The power steering box, also called the power steering pump, can develop noises when the bearings wear out, requiring that the pump be replaced. The power steering pump is attached to the motor with bolts and has two power steering hoses attached. You can replace the pump yourself in an hour or two with some basic tools.

Instructions

    1

Unfasten the negative battery cable from the battery post with an open-end wrench. Move the battery cable out of the way and locate the power steering pump on the front driver's side of the motor.

    2

Place a drain pan on the ground under the power steering pump and loosen the nut that secures the high pressure hose to the bottom of the. Loosen the screw clamp on the low pressure return hose near the top of the power steering pump.

    3

Take the hoses off the power steering pump and let the steering fluid drain into the drain pan. Unfasten the bolts that secure the power steering pump to the engine with a socket wrench and remove the pump from the engine compartment, setting the power steering belt aside.

    4

Place the power steering belt around the pulley of the new power steering pump and fasten the pump to the motor with bolts, leaving the bolts a little loose to allow for adjustment of the pump. Pull the power steering pump back to add tension to the belt and tighten the bolts with the socket wrench.

    5

Fasten the power steering low pressure hose to the top of the new pump with the screw clamp. Attach the power steering high pressure hose to the bottom of the pump with the open-end wrench.

    6

Reattach the negative battery cable to the battery post and secure it with the open-end wrench. Fill the power steering pump reservoir with power steering fluid and place the cap back on the top of the reservoir.
