DIY Chipped Auto Glass Repair

DIY Chipped Auto Glass Repair

Small to moderate chips in auto glass can easily be repaired with a resin-based glass compound repair kit. In order to prevent the chip from expanding and permanently ruining the car's windshield, it is important to repair the chip as soon as it appears on the surface. Consult with an auto repair specialist if the chip becomes enlarged, as the auto's glass may need to be completely replaced.

Instructions

    1

Clean the window of streaks and residue. Spray a moderate amount of glass cleaner onto the glass. Wipe away streaks and dirt from the glass with paper towels or newspaper. Allow the glass to completely air dry in the sun before proceeding to repair the crack.

    2

Use a resin-based, syringe-style glass repair kit. According to Everything Auto, unwrap the packaging and center the adhesive disk -- which holds the pedestal in place -- onto the chip."Punch out the hole in the adhesive disc, peel the backing off of one side of the disc and press it onto the glass," Everything Auto states. Make sure that the pedestal on the disk is facing upwards so that the syringe can be inserted into place.

    3

Insert the syringe (which comes with kit) into the pedestal that is attached to the disk. Make sure that the syringe's suction opening is facing downward into the pedestal and the plunger facing up. Twist the syringe clockwise until it snaps into place inside the pedestal.

    4

Plunge the syringe upwards to suck air pockets from the chip. Hold momentarily and let go of the syringe so that the suction will force the repair compound into the chip. Repeat this plunging process at least 10 times.

    5

Allow the repair compound to set in a well-ventilated area or out in the sun for about 30 minutes. Clean up any excess compound left on glass with a damp towel.
