2000 Chevorlet Pickup: How to Repair the Electric Window

The power windows in a 2000 Chevrolet pickup use two vertical post cable regulators. The cables cross each other in the center between the posts allowing the same motion of the window lift mechanism on each post. The cable or pulleys usually fail causing the window to stop in its position. The regulator comes complete with the window motor. It is not difficult to replace the window regulator and requires a minimum of tools. You will save a lot of money doing it yourself.

Instructions

    1

Remove the door panel by first removing the plastic concealment cover below the armrest by prying it out with a common screwdriver. Pry the cover up around the door handle and a rectangular plastic cover -- about 2 inches long directly above the armrest. Remove the two plastic screw caps on the front side of the door panel and the one on the rear.

    2

Remove the Phillips screws under all these covers. Pry the side-view mirror concealment cover off using a screwdriver. Pull the door panel away from the door enough to reach behind the panel and unplug the window switch electrical connectors. Lay the panel aside.

    3

Release the door latch rod from the door handle arm by lifting the blue rod retainer off the rod and pulling the rod out of the door handle. Remove the single screw in the door handle itself and remove the handle. Peel the moisture shield back exposing the window mechanism.

    4

Look at the window regulator. Notice there are two vertical posts with window support brackets on them. The front post has the motor attached. Remove the nut in each window support bracket using a socket and ratchet and tape the window in place before removing the regulator to ensure it doesn't fall.

    5

Remove the nuts on the front bracket. There is one at the top and bottom. Remove the three bolts in the window motor. Remove the bolts on the rear post top and bottom. Unplug the window motor electrical connector on the motor.

    6

Rotate the rear post, withdraw it from the door and do the same for the front post. Insert the new regulator in the same way you removed the old one. Align the front post holes, insert the bolts and tighten them firmly. Do the same for the window motor and the rear post.

    7

Plug the electrical connector into the window motor. Remove the tape and lower the window. Place it into the window support brackets. Install the bolts and tighten them firmly. Place the moisture shield back into place and install the door handle with its single screw. Insert the door latch rod into the door handle arm and swing the blue plastic retainer down and snap it on the rod.

    8

Hold the door panel close to the door and plug in all the electrical connectors on the window switch. Hook the door panel over the top doorsill and lower the panel. Install all the Phillips screws and tighten them snugly. Install the plastic concealment covers and just push them in until they snap in place. Install the upper front-side mirror concealment cover by pushing its studs into the holes in the doorframe until it snaps in place.
