First of all there is no such thing as a Simple Oil Change. It should never be a quick 5 minute experience.

Non-synthetic oil changes need to be done on your vehicle every 3,000 miles, period. Full synthetic oil changes done at no more than 5,000 miles. WHY???

An oil change is the cheapest and easiest way to keep your vehicle in good running condition and help you to avoid costly repairs.

If you've heard that oil needs changing less than stated above, or not needed as often. It is under the assumption that the vehicles classified for "Normal Service". But there are almost no vehicles driven today that fit under this classification. "Normal Service" does not include a vehicle that drives short trips, does stop and go driving, drives on dusty roads, or in extreme temperatures, and generally lacks usage. Cars that meet any one of these criteria classify for "Extreme Service" and will need to have oil changes on a more timely basis, as recommended

Oil's job is to lubricate the engine and keep it free from contaminants. If you don't change the oil or don't change it frequent enough, your car will certainly be in for trouble.

Unchanged oil becomes thick, and will eventually clog the oil filter and pass to the engine through a relief valve. Dirty oil is thick and abrasive and will definitely cause more wear on the engine.
