How to Use an Egg to Fix an Auto Radiator

When your vehicle's radiator has sprung a leak, there are several temporary quick fixes that will let you get to a repair facility. One involves cracking an egg into your radiator. The white of the egg is cooked by the heat of the radiator's water. The cooked egg then travels throughout your cooling system until it comes to the leak, where the pressure of the out-flowing water forces the cooked egg into the hole in your radiator, temporarily plugging it. Keep in mind that such repairs are only temporary and permanent repairs need to be made as quickly as possible.

Instructions

    1

Fill the radiator with water unless it is already filled.

    2

Run the car's engine for 20 minutes, or until the water in the radiator is hot. Watch the engine's heat gauge. After the water is hot, wait 15 minutes for the water to cool enough so you can safely remove the radiator cap.

    3

Break three eggs into a bowl, being careful not to break any of the yokes. Use a large slotted spoon to carefully remove the yolks, leaving the clear runny part in the bowl. The yolks may be cooked and eaten or discarded.

    4

Place a rag over the hot radiator cap once the radiator has cooled for 15 minutes. Press down on the cap and turn the cap counterclockwise until you feel resistance. Lift the cap straight off from the point of resistance. Start the car's engine.

    5

Slowly pour the three egg whites into the water of the radiator. Once all of the egg whites are in the radiator, replace the radiator cap by pressing down on the cap and turning it clockwise until resistance is felt.

    6

Idle the engine until radiator has become plugged with the cooked egg whites and the leak stops. Add more water to the radiator if necessary by removing the radiator cap as previously described and adding water until the radiator is full. Replace the cap and drive slowly to a repair station, where the radiator can be properly repaired.
