How to Take Out the Heater Fan in a 1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue

Oldsmobile introduced the Intrigue in the 1998 model year as the replacement for the aging and outdated Cutlass Supreme. Despite its somewhat sporty and modern appearance, the Intrigue did not last long, as Olds discontinued it after just five model years. The 1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue came standard with a 215-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine and air conditioning. The blower motor-and-fan assembly was responsible for circulating heated or cooled air throughout the cabin of the vehicle. No blower motor means no heat or air conditioning, which can become rather uncomfortable. Replacing the blower motor in the 1999 Intrigue is a straightforward task that requires relocating some wires.

Instructions

Removal

    1

Adjust the passengers seat as far back as it goes. Look under the passengers side of the dashboard and find the instrument panel insulator, which is the black panel on the underside of the dashboard.

    2

Find the two push-in-style retaining clips on the instrument panel insulator, nearest the passengers seat. Pry the two clips out with a flat-head screwdriver.

    3

Pull the insulator toward the passengers seat to free it and lower it just enough to access the courtesy lamp socket. Twist the socket counterclockwise to unlock it, then remove the socket from the insulator. Remove the insulator.

    4

Look behind the dashboard and find the wiring harness retainer -- the plastic clip securing a bundle of wires. Open the harness and move the wires aside to access the blower motor.

    5

Find the blower motor, the circular electrical component attached to the heating, air-conditioning and ventilation box, behind the dashboard.

    6

Pull the cooling tube -- the plastic hose plugged into the blower motor -- from the blower motor. Unplug the blower motor wiring harness and remove the three blower motor-retaining bolts, using a ratchet and socket. Lower the blower motor-and-fan assembly from the HVAC box and remove it from the vehicle.

Installation

    7

Lift the new blower motor-and-fan assembly into the HVAC box and tighten its retaining bolts to 14 foot-pounds using a torque wrench and socket. Plug the blower-motor cooling hose into the air inlet on the new blower motor and plug the wiring harness into the blower motor.

    8

Guide the wiring harness wires into the retainer and close the retainer to secure the wires.

    9

Lift the instrument panel insulator and plug the courtesy light socket into its hole in the insulator. Twist the courtesy light socket a quarter turn clockwise to lock it into place.

    10

Align the holes on the end of the insulator closest to the passengers side seat with the holes in the dashboard. Press the push-in-style retaining clips into the holes until the heads of the retainers seat on the insulator.

    11

Push upward on the front-most end of the insulator to ensure it seats in the ledge of the dashboard.
