How to Replace the Water Pump on a 2002 Buick Regal

When the engine on your 2002 Buick Regal is running, it creates heat from the friction of the all moving components and the combustion of fuel. In order to reduce this heat, your engine relies on the cooling system. The water pump keeps the coolant circulating through the system to help transfer the heat to the radiator, where it can then be dissipated. The water pump on the 2002 Buick Regal is turned by the serpentine belt which is driven by the engine. This causes the pump to spin faster, in turn cooling down the engine faster when it's running hard.

Instructions

    1

Prepare the vehicle for service by removing any power sources to the engine. This can be done by removing the wires going to the battery. Drain the engine coolant into a reusable container by removing the plug at the bottom of the radiator.

    2

Remove the drive belt from the water pump pulley by releasing tension on the belt. To release tension on the belt you will have to loosen the belt tensioner and move it.

    3

Take off the power steering pump by removing the mounting bolts holding it on. This will allow access to one of the water pump's mounting bolts. Set it aside until installation is complete.

    4

Remove the water pump pulley by removing the bolts that are holding it on. Remove the water pump by unscrewing the bolts holding it onto the engine. Pull the water pump away from the engine.

    5

Position the new water pump over the spot on the engine where the old one was located. Place a new gasket between the water pump and the engine. Tighten the long bolts to 25 lb-ft. of torque and the short bolts to 16 lb-ft. of torque.

    6

Put the water pump pulley in place on the water pump and tighten the bolts to 25 lb-ft. of torque. Reconnect the power steering pump by putting it back in its former location and replacing the mounting bolts. Replace the drive belt over the water pump pulley and increase tension on the belt by tightening the belt tensioner.

    7

Refill the cooling system and replace all of the battery cables. Start the engine of the vehicle to check for any leaks coming from the newly installed water pump.
