How to Replace My 1995 Mustang Tail Light Bulbs

The original Mustang concept car was more similar to the Chevy Corvair than the Mustang known today. The Mustang I concept was a two-seater with a mid-mounted, V-4 engine. Fortunately, Ford chose the second Mustang concept over the Mustang I concept when it went up for sale midway through the 1964 model year. The 1995 Mustang came standard with a 145-horsepower, 3.8-liter V-6 engine. The Mustang also had an optional 4.6-liter V-8 that produced 215 horsepower in the GT and GTS trims and a 240 horsepower variant for the Cobra trim. The 1995 Mustang had a bit of a retro styling, including the taillights, broken into three sections. Replacing the taillight bulbs in this segmented taillight assembly is relatively easy.

Instructions

    1

Open the Mustang's trunk and locate the plastic access panel directly behind the taillight. Pry the access panel off, using a flat-head screwdriver, exposing the rear of the taillight assembly.

    2

Remove the four nuts on the rear of the taillight assembly, using a ratchet and socket.

    3

Pull the taillight assembly from the rear of the Mustang.

    4

Turn the taillight assembly over and turn the socket of the burnt-out bulb counterclockwise to unlock it -- the 1995 Mustang has three taillight bulbs in each taillight assembly. Pull the socket and bulb from the taillight assembly.

    5

Grab the bulb and pull it from the socket with a slight wiggling motion.

    6

Grab a new 3157 taillight bulb with a clean, lint-free cloth and press it into the taillight assembly. Don't touch the glass potion of the bulb with your bare hands; the oils left behind can cause the bulb to blow out prematurely.

    7

Guide the socket and new bulb into the taillight assembly, lining up the tabs on the socket with the notches in the taillight assembly, and twist the socket clockwise to lock it in place.

    8

Set the taillight back on the rear of the Mustang, guiding the studs on the rear of the taillight assembly through the holes in the taillight bed. Tighten the nuts on the rear of the taillight assembly with a ratchet and socket.

    9

Reinstall the taillight access panel in the rear of the trunk by pressing it on with your hands. Listen for the panel to click into place. Close the Mustang's trunk.

    10

Repeat Steps 1 through 9 for the taillight bulb on the other side of the Mustang.
