How to Replace a 97 Honda Odyssey Headlight

In 1995, Honda made the jump into the realm of minivans with the release of the Odyssey. Unlike other mainstream minivans of that era, all four of the Odyssey's doors swung outward instead of having rear sliding doors. The 1997 Odyssey carried the same look and door format as the debut model, as well as the same base 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine. Replacing the headlight bulbs in the 1997 Odyssey is a relatively simple task that most owners can complete with ease.

Instructions

    1

Skip to Step 2 if you are only replacing the driver-side headlight bulb.
For the passenger-side bulb, find the air intake cover -- the black, plastic component on the front, passenger side of the engine compartment -- and pry its two retaining pins out with a flat-head screwdriver. Lift the air intake cover to gain access to the backside of the passenger-side headlight assembly.

    2

For either side, press the unlocking tab on the headlight bulb wiring harness and unplug it from the backside of the headlight bulb. Pull the rubber weather seal from the rear of the headlight assembly, exposing the headlight bulb and its retaining spring - the thin wire that holds the bulb in place.

    3

Push the end of the headlight bulb retaining spring toward the headlight assembly to separate it from its retaining hook, then push the spring inward so it is clear of the hook. Pivot the retaining spring away from the headlight bulb and pull the headlight bulb from the headlight assembly.

    4

Hold a new No. 9003 headlight bulb by its metal base and insert it into the headlight assembly, aligning its locating tabs with the slots in the socket. Pivot the retaining spring over the back of the headlight bulb and latch the end of the spring into its retaining hook.

    5

Align the rubber weather seal with ridge on the rear of the headlight assembly and position the seal so the word "Up" is in the 12 o' clock position. Press the seal onto the rear of the headlight assembly, then plug the wiring harness into the rear of the headlight.

    6

Reinstall the air intake cover on to the front, passenger side of the engine compartment, if applicable. Press its retaining clips into their holes to secure the cover in place. Close the hood.
