How to Install Door Speakers in a 2001 Ford Sport Trac

Prior to 2001, some Ford buyers preferred the Ranger because of its pickup bed, while some preferred the Explorer for its passenger room. Ford realized that there were enough customers that liked both models and decided to combine the best of both to form the truck-SUV hybrid Ford Explorer Sport Trac in 2001. This SUV had enough room to haul four adults comfortably, and offered a small bed in the rear for light-duty hauling. The 2001 Explorer Sport had a four-speaker sound system as a standard feature; Ford positioned the speakers of this system in each of the doors. Replacing the speakers requires removing and replacing the door panels.

Instructions

    1

Remove the screw cover from behind the pull bar -- the plastic panel behind the bar that you pull when closing the door -- by prying it off with a flat-head screwdriver. Pry the door handle bezel -- the plastic trim around the handle you pull to open the door -- outward to disengage its retaining clips and pull it off the door panel.

    2

Insert the blade of a flat-head screwdriver into the slot on the rear of the power window and lock switch bezel -- the plastic trim surrounding the switches -- and pry upward to disengage the rear clip. Pull upward on the bezel to remove it from the door panel.

    3

Press and hold the unlocking button on each wiring harness plugged into the power window and door lock switches, and pull each harness from its respective switch with a slight wiggling motion. Set the bezel and switches in a secure area.

    4

Remove the two screws on the bottom of the front door panel -- under the map pocket -- with a ratchet and socket. If you are working on the rear door panel, there is only one bolt on the bottom of the panel.

    5

Find the two screws behind the door panel pull handle and remove these with a ratchet and socket.

    6

Pry around the perimeter of the door panel with a trim stick to disengage the door panel-retaining clips. Unscrew the knob from the door lock, and lift the panel up and off the doorframe, exposing the speaker behind it.

    7

Unfasten the four speaker-retaining screws with a ratchet and socket. Pull the speaker from the doorframe until you can access its wiring harness, then pull the harness from the speaker with a slight wiggling motion.

    8

Plug the wiring harness into the receptacle on the new speaker, and set the speaker in its cutout in the doorframe. Hand-thread the four speaker-retaining screws, then tighten them with a ratchet and socket.

    9

Guide the door lock stem through the hole in the top of the door panel, then line up the retaining clips on the door panel with the holes on the doorframe. Secure the panel, by striking around the perimeter of the door panel lightly with the palm of your hand to engage the retaining clips. Screw the door lock knob back onto the door lock stud.

    10

Hand-thread the lower retaining screws -- one on the rear panel and two on the front panel -- on the door panel, then tighten them with a ratchet and socket.

    11

Thread the two retaining screws behind the door panel pull handle, then tighten them with a ratchet and socket.

    12

Line up the retaining clips on the door handle bezel with the slots in the door panel. Press the bezel onto the door panel until the clips snap into place. Line up the clips on the rear of the screw cover with the slots in the door panel behind the pull handle, and press the screw cover onto the door panel until the clips snap into place.

    13

Plug the wiring harnesses into their respective receptacles on the power window and door lock switches -- they are different sizes to prevent confusion. Set the power window and door lock bezel and switches onto the door panel, lining up the clips on the bezel with the slots on the door panel. Press the bezel downward to snap the clips into place.

    14

Repeat steps 1 through 13 to replace any additional door speakers.
