The charging system for BMW motorcycles is known as the airhead charging system. It is composed of several parts, including a solid diode board mount, voltage regulator, battery and alternator. The BMW diode board converts alternating current from the alternator into direct current, which can be used to charge the battery and run other electrical systems on the motorcycle. It takes about an hour to change out the diode board mount.

Remove the BMW's negative battery cable with the adjustable wrench.
2Locate the diode board mount which is right next to the alternator and stator.
3Disconnect the stator wire and the alternator wire, which are attached to the diode board.
4Take off the retaining screw holding the old diode board mount in place. Set the new diode board mount in place. Insert the retaining screw and tighten it with the screwdriver.
5Connect the alternator wire and stator wire to the respective terminals on the diode board mount.
6Replace the BMW motorcycle's negative battery cable with the adjustable wrench.
