How to Fix a 1990 Chevy Beretta Heater That Smokes & Makes Noise When Turned On

The heater blower motor on a 1990 Chevy Beretta will make a loud noise, and in severe cases smoke, when the bearing or commutator has worn out. The blower motor is located under the hood on the passenger side firewall on a 1990 Beretta. It is a wise to replace the heater blower resistor as well when the blower motor has failed. The reason for this is that at the time of the motor failure the motor was more than likely drawing a much higher amount of amperage, which causes heat. The resistor controls the motor speeds through varying the resistance to the motor. The resistors were overheated and likely to fail in a short period of time. If this happens the fan will not operate.

Instructions

    1

Open the hood and locate the heater blower motor on the passenger side firewall. Remove the plastic water shield over the motor using a socket. Remove the serpentine belt only if the Beretta has a V-6. Place a suitable wrench on the belt tensioner and pull the tensioner away from the belt. Lift the belt off the alternator but do not remove the belt any further.

    2

Pull the vent hose out of the blower motor. Unplug both the blower motor and the resistor plugs. Remove the bolts surrounding the blower motor using a socket and pull the blower motor with cage fan out of the heater housing.

    3

Remove the nut on the end of the blower motor shaft with a wrench. This holds the blower fan. Lift the fan off and transfer it to the new motor, install the nut and tighten it with a wrench. Install the new motor into the opening in the heater housing. Install and tighten all the bolts. The blower motor resistor is situated within two inches of the blower motor. To replace this just unplug the resistor and remove the two small 7 mm screws with a socket. Pull the resistor out and install a new one. Install the two screws and plug it in.

    4

Plug in the electrical connector plugs in the motor and resistor. Plug the vent hose into the motor. Install the moisture shield and tighten the bolts with a socket. Install the serpentine belt by installing a wrench on the tensioner and pulling it away from the belt. Install the belt over the alternator and release the tension on the wrench.
