How do I Change a Heater Core in a 1995 Isuzu Pickup?

The most common reason that you would need to change the heater core in an Isuzu pickup truck is clogging. Failure to periodically flush and fill the engine cooling system allows sludge to build up, clogging the heater core, and in some cases, the radiator, too. Other reasons that you might need to change the heater core is if it starts to leak inside the truck. In any case, the procedure is not difficult, but you will want to set aside an entire day for the project so that you do not feel like you have to rush through the job.

Instructions

    1

Make sure the engine is completely cool before you start. Disconnect the negative battery cable using a wrench to loosen the terminal nut.

    2

Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core in the engine compartment using a screwdriver to loosen the clamps. Place a drain pan under the radiator and drain the coolant by opening the valve with a wrench.

    3

Place the engine coolant out of reach of children and household pets. Remove the knobs from the radio and the heater by pulling them off. Remove the instrument cluster and radio using a screwdriver to remove the screws.

Remove the ventilator duct and heater unit using a screwdriver. Remove the cover from the heater unit using a wrench and take out the heater core.

    6

Insert the new heater core into the heater unit. Replace the cover and tighten the bolts with a wrench. Install the heater unit and the ventilator duct back into the truck and secure it with the screwdriver.

    7

Snap the side ventilators into place. Install the instrument cluster assembly and secure it with the screwdriver. Install the defroster nozzle and secure it with the screwdriver.

    8

Install the instrument cluster and secure it with a screwdriver. Install the radio and mount it using the screwdriver. Move to the engine compartment and secure the heater hoses to the heater core. Tighten the hose clamps with the screwdriver.

    9

Reconnect the negative battery cable and tighten the terminal nut with a wrench. Refill the radiator and reservoir with fresh engine coolant. Start the truck and check the system thoroughly for leaks.
