Removing My 1992 Ford F-150's Headlights

Ford introduced a new style of headlights for the F-150 in 1987, eliminating the classic sealed-beam headlight in favor of bulb-style headlights. This meant that instead of replacing a large glass headlight assembly every time a headlight burned out, you had to replace only a bulb inside the headlight assembly. In 1992, the front end of the F-150 underwent a mild modification, as Ford upgraded the aerodynamic qualities of its front lights and bumper. The style of headlight bulb remained the same as the previous generation, however, which made for a quick replacement of the 1992 F-150 headlights.

Instructions

    1

Park the F-150 on a flat surface. Open and support the hood.

    2

Look on the rear of one headlight assembly and find the black plastic locking ring. Twist the locking ring counterclockwise to unlock it and slide the ring a few inches up the headlight wiring. Pull the bulb from the headlight assembly.

    3

Pull upward and hold the locking tab on the headlight wiring harness and pull the wiring harness from the headlight.

    4

Slide the new style 9007 bulb into the rear of the headlight assembly with the flat part of the bulbs socket facing upward. Twist the bulb slightly to align the notches in the bulb with the tabs on the headlight assembly.

    5

Guide the plastic locking ring back into place over the headlight and twist it clockwise to lock it into place, securing the bulb. Press the headlight wiring harness back into the headlights socket.

    6

Repeat steps 2 through 5 to replace the other headlight.
