Whenever a Passlock sensor, body control module or powertrain control module are repaired or replaced, you must reset the security system in order for the vehicle to operate properly. GM calls this procedure the vehicle theft deterrent relearn, or VTD relearn. This procedure may also need to be performed if there a break in communication between any of those modules, which can happen if they are removed for another repair. When the VTD relearn is required, the fuel pump will not operate properly; the engine will start, but it will immediately stall. The Tech 2, GMs factory scan tool, is required for this procedure. No aftermarket scan tools can reach the same level of communication with the modules necessary to accomplish the VTD relearn.
