How to Replace a CJ5 Blower Motor

The blower motor on your Jeep CJ5 from the 70's and 80's drives the squirrel-cage type fan which forces air through the heating and ventilation system. The blower fan pushes air through the heater box, moving it across the heater core, when the proper air valves are open, causing hot air to blow through the vents. When the vents are closed, air from the outside will blow through the vents. The blower motor on your CJ5, without air conditioning can be changed in less than 30 minutes.

Instructions

    1

Disconnect the blower motor power connection by grasping both sides of the connector and pulling apart while depressing the locking clip.

    2

Rotate the bolts that secure the blower motor to the bulkhead counterclockwise to remove them. There will be between three and five bolts.

    3

Pull the blower motor straight out of the opening in the bulkhead and heater box.

    4

Install the new blower motor in the hole in the bulkhead, paying attention to bolt hole alignment.

    5

Install the bolts in the holes in the blower motor flange and through the bulkhead and rotate them clockwise by hand.

    6

Torque the blower motor bolts to between 15 and 30 foot-pounds.

    7

Reconnect the blower motor power connector, pushing the two halves together until a solid click is heard.
