If the car stereo on your 1997 GMC Safari is malfunctioning or if you wish to install a new unit you can remove the old stereo with only a socket wrench and a Phillips screwdriver. The removal procedure is fairly simple and only takes 15 minutes to complete although you will need to disconnect the Safari's battery before beginning.
Instructions
- 1
Open the Safari's hood and use a socket wrench to remove the battery's negative terminal.
2Open the Safari's driver-side door and locate the screws securing the stereo to the vehicle. There are four screws on the front of the radio, one screw in each corner.
3Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove each of the four screws from the stereo.
4Pull the stereo out of the Safari and reach behind the unit. Squeeze the two plastic tabs on the electrical connector of the stereo and disconnect the connector from the stereo.
5Pull the stereo out of the Safari. Install a new stereo if necessary.
