How to Change a Brake Light on a 95 Toyota 4Runner

Toyota released its truck-based SUV, known as the 4Runner, for the 1985 model year. The original 4Runner was basically a pickup with a removable cap placed over the rear. In 1995, the 4Runner was a more refined SUV, but Toyota still based it off the pickup and it had the same taillight and headlight assemblies as its pickup cousin. Replacing the brake light on a 1995 4Runner is a task that requires little time to complete.

Instructions

    1

Remove the four screws holding the taillight lens to the taillight assembly, using a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the lens from the taillight assembly, exposing the bulbs -- the bottom bulb is the brake light bulb.

    2

Press the brake light bulb inward and twist it counterclockwise to unlock it. Pull the brake light bulb from the taillight assembly.

    3

Grab a new 1157 taillight bulb with a clean, lint-free cloth and press it into the socket, making certain to line up the tabs on the bulb with the notches in the socket. Push down on the bulb and twist it clockwise to lock it into place. This style of bulb only fits one way, so if the bulb does not lock into place, remove the bulb, rotate it 180 degrees and reinsert it.

    4

Set the taillight lens back on the taillight assembly and tighten the screws with a Phillips screwdriver.
