How to Change the Brake Light Bulbs in a 1998 Continental

Lincoln redesigned their flagship luxury car, the Continental, for the 1998 model year with updated exterior styling and multiple interior upgrades. While the safety upgrades didn't arrive until the 1999 model year, the size of the Continental provided a modicum of safety as a by-product. Brake lights are part of the Lincoln's safety package, by providing drivers behind the Continental with fair warning that the Lincoln is coming to a halt -- that is, if the brake light bulbs haven't burned out. Lincoln recommends examining the brake lights every other week and immediately replacing any burned out bulbs you discover.

Instructions

    1

Open the Continental's trunk. Pull the carpet away from the front of the tail lamp assembly. Remove the nuts holding the tail lamp assembly to the Continental, using a socket wrench and 8-mm socket.

    2

Pull the tail lamp assembly off the back of the Continental to expose the brake light and reverse light sockets. Squeeze the brake light socket and turn it 1/4-turn counterclockwise. Pull the socket straight out of the tail lamp assembly.

    3

Push the old brake light bulb into the socket, turn it counterclockwise and then pull it out of the socket.

    4

Push the new 1157 bulb into the socket and turn it until it clicks into place. Slide the socket and bulb into the tail lamp assembly and turn clockwise until the socket locks into the assembly.

    5

Slide the tail lamp assembly back into place on the rear of the Continental. Reinstall the retaining nuts, using the socket and wrench. Move the trunk carpet back into place.
