How to Run Wire Through the Firewall of a 96 Grand Cherokee

If you upgraded your stereo or are adding aftermarket gauges, you need to run wiring through the firewall, into the cab of the 1996 Grand Cherokee. The Grand Cherokee has several holes in the firewall with wires running through them. These holes have grommets around the sharp edges of the holes to keep the insulation on the wires from being damaged by the metal. The major hole is located on the driver's side of the vehicle, usually just under and to the left of the master cylinder, depending on the model of your Grand Cherokee.

Instructions

    1

Set the roll of wires at its connection point in the engine compartment. Pull the wire off the roll and route it through the engine compartment and over to one of the holes in the firewall. Make sure you have enough so that the wires doesn't touch the exhaust and can be wire-tied out of the way.

    2

Push the wire through the hole in the firewall. Go into the cab of the vehicle. Shine the flashlight under the dash in the general location of the hole in the firewall to search for the end of the wire you just pushed through.

    3

Grab the end of the wire and pull enough through the firewall to reach where you need it, whether to the console for the radio or, if you are adding aftermarket gauges, to where the gauges will be mounted. Pull enough through so it is slightly slack. You need about 3 inches of slack -- not enough to hang down and get in the way, but enough so that the wire does not pull out of the accessory to which you are attaching it when the vehicle moves.

    4

Check the wire in the engine compartment and adjust it as necessary so that you have enough to route through the engine compartment and the ties. Cut the wire. Hook up the wire according the instructions for the accessory you are installing.
