How to Replace a 1999 Hyundai Accent Brake Switch

The Hyundai Accent continues to be a popular model, primarily because of its low price and snappy performance. The 1999 Hyundai Accent brake switch is located under the driver's dashboard; however, it is mounted near the top of the brake pedal so some effort is needed to reach the mounting area. There are only two wires going to the switch and operation is very straightforward. When the brake pedal is pressed, the switch extends and the brake lights come on.

Instructions

    1

Work your way under the driver's dash, or remove the lower dash cover by removing the two lower bolts and lifting it up and out of the way. While not absolutely necessary to remove this cover, it might make it easier and more accessible to reach the switch.

    2

Pull out the switch. Shine the flashlight to the top of the brake pedal. Just to the rear of the pedal is a small bracket that the brake switch fits into. Reach behind and grab the switch, then pull it out. The switch is held in place by the bracket and the thread-like rings on the switch body. It makes for a tight fit, so some force may be needed to pull the switch out.

    3

    Unplug the wire connector.

    4

Insert and adjust the switch. Push the wire connector onto the new switch, and push the switch into the switch mounting hole. Slightly depress the brake pedal and continue to push the switch to firmly seat it next to the switch stop on the pedal. Release the pedal and lightly tug upward to adjust the switch. You will hear the switch click into place as the final adjustment is made.

    5

Replace the lower cover if it was removed.

    6

Test the brake lights. Operate the brake pedal and have an assistant watch the brake lights to be certain of their operation.
