Wiring a car alarm horn can be a challenge, depending on the type of vehicle you are working on. If you hitch the wiring in the wrong sequence or to the wrong wire, you can be faced with problems ranging from shorting out your cars wiring system to the alarm never turning off. The problem also compounds quickly if the alarm horn misfires unexpectedly. As a result, special attention needs to be taken when hooking up the alarm horn since it is the most audible component of the alarm.
Instructions
- 1
Examine the diagram of the alarm wiring instructions included with the alarm package. Follow the color wiring instructions and compare them with the wiring diagram for your car.
2Confirm with the instructions where each alarm component will be located and pull out or expose the wires to make them accessible for work.
3Raise the car hood. Position the alarm horn unit in a location where it can be attached to the car frame. Mark drilling holes, as necessary, with a marker. Drill the frame and position bolts through it.
4Aim the cone of the horn downward so that gravity keeps condensation from pooling inside it. Bolt the horn to the frame with a socket wrench and crescent wrench. Tighten the hardware until snug. Do not over-tighten.
5With a power drill, make a hole through a pre-molded cavity in the car firewall to get the alarm horn wiring to the alarm module installed under the steering wheel.
6Take the red wire or colored wire going into the horn and splice it to a positive or red wire for the siren coming from the alarm unit module through the firewall. Splice the two positive wires together. Strip the wires with a crimper tool and pinch them together with a new wire connector after running the wire through a safety fuse connection.
7Take the black wire from the horn and attach it to an eye loop connector. Bolt the eyelet connecter to the car frame to ground it.
8Continue installing the rest of the car alarm and related components as instructed. Test the system to make sure that the alarm horn works as expected.
