2001 was the debut year for the Escape, a compact SUV offered by Ford. The 2001 Escape came standard with a 127-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and had an optional 201-horsepower 3.0-liter available. The 3.0-liter engine used a coil-on-plug ignition system, meaning it had an individual coil for each cylinder. When one coil fails on the Escape, you can replace just the failed coil pack. Locating the failed coil pack, especially the No. 2 coil pack, can be difficult.
Locating the Number 2 Coil
The No. 2 ignition coil is on the right cylinder head of the engine -- near the rear of the engine compartment -- making locating and removing it slightly difficult. Ford positioned the No. 2 coil pack under the upper intake manifold, in the center of the right cylinder head -- between the Nos. 1 and 3 coil packs.
Removing Number 2 Coil
To gain access to the No. 2 ignition coil, you must remove the upper intake manifold and its components. Removing the coil pack requires unplugging the coil pack wiring harness, removing one bolt and pulling the coil pack up with a slight twisting motion.
Installing Number 2 Coil
Push the coil pack onto the spark plug, tighten its bolt to 4 to 5 foot-pounds and reconnect the wiring harness. Reinstall the intake manifold and components, and tighten it to 7 to 8 foot-pounds.
