How to Install a Windshield on a 1500 Goldwing

Honda's GL 1500 Goldwing is a premiere touring bike, even though it went out of production in 2001. It's a well-built workhorse that will last for many years if well maintained. Sooner or later, however, the windshield is likely to take a stone from the road and need replacing. It's a job suitable for the intermediate mechanic, and it shouldn't take more than an hour or two. One thing is certain: the next time you get caught in a passing thunderstorm, you'll be glad you took the time to install a new windshield.

Instructions

Remove the Windshield

    1

Raise both windshield adjuster levers to raise the windshield. Pull back the trim around the mirrors to expose the screws. Remove the two screws holding the black trim under the windshield garnish on each side. Remove the black trim. (This trim is not on the 1995 through 2000 bikes.)

    2

Remove the two screws on each side of the windshield garnish. (The garnish is the trim that covers the front bottom section of window.) Stand in front of the bike and gently pull the garnish, tipping the top toward you to remove it.

    3

Remove the five screws holding the windshield. Remove the five oval mounts beneath the screws. Make note of the position of each mount, since they are not identical. Remove the windshield

Install the Windshield

    4

Set the windshield into position on the bike. Replace the five oval mounts, noting that the two outside mounts are deeper than the others. Replace the five mounting screws.

    5

Stand in front of the bike, holding the garnish. Note that tabs on the bottom of the garnish fit into slots on the bike. Tip the garnish toward you and slide it into position, tabs first. Replace the mounting screws on each end of the garnish.

    6

Replace the black trim and mounting screws on each end of the garnish. (This trim is not on the 1995 through 2000 bikes.) Fit the mirror trim back into position. Set the windshield adjuster levers according to your preference.
