How to Install Steel Brake Lines

Installing steel brake lines yourself is not difficult. There is no need to take the car to an automotive repair shop because you can install the line in your driveway in just a few minutes. When there is a problem with your brake line such as a kink in the line, or a hole, you need to replace it. You cannot straighten a brake line with a kink without weakening the line, and if you attempt to plug the hole, it will not hold very long and you may even completely clog the line.

Instructions

    1

Open the engine compartment and disconnect the negative battery cable. Unsnap the lid from the master brake cylinder. Drain the brake fluid from the cylinder using the turkey baster and place it in the drain pan for recycling. Place the wheel chocks in front of the front wheels, or behind the rear wheels depending on where the problem brake line is.

    2

Lift the automobile using the automobile jack. Place a jack stand under the vehicle and raise it to the frame. Crawl under the car and locate the problem brake line. Thoroughly clean the brake line fittings with the wire brush to prevent contaminating the brake lines. Loosen the fitting with a wrench and disconnect the line.

    3

Allow remaining brake fluid to drain into the drain pan. Loosen the other end of the line with the wrench and disconnect it, allowing the brake fluid to drain into the pan. Pull the brake line from the retaining clips and from under the car. Place a new brake line under the car and snap it into the retaining clips. Connect the fittings and tighten them with a wrench.

    4

Remove the jack stand from under the car. Lower the vehicle to the ground. Refill the master cylinder with fresh brake fluid. Bleed the brake lines by having a helper to pump and hold the brake pedal while you open the bleeder valve with a wrench to expel the air from the brake lines. Continue with this procedure until the air is gone from all lines.

    5

Add brake fluid as needed throughout the procedure to make sure the master cylinder stays full. Connect the negative battery cable and tighten the terminal nut with a wrench.
