How to Install An Alternator Belt In a 2000 Montero Sport

The Mitsubishi Montero was first introduced in 1996 by Japan as the Mitsubishi Challenger Sport. Once the Mitsubishi Challenger made it to the United States, the name was changed to the Montero Sport. The 2000 Montero Sport model vehicles come equipped with three different drive belts that operate different engine accessories. Each belt comes with its own adjustable idler pulley. The alternator belt is the middle belt and in order for it to be replaced, the power steering belt first must be removed. Remove and replace the alternator belt by loosening and tightening the idler pulley for the belt.

Instructions

    1

Park the truck and turn off the engine. Open the hood and wait for the engine to cool down.

    2

Stand in front of the engine and locate the power steering pump adjustable idler pulley. The power steering pump is located on the upper left-hand side of the engine, and the adjustable idler pulley is directly under the power steering pump.

    3

Loosen the bolt in the middle of the adjustable idler pulley for the power steering pump with a ratchet and a socket. Once the bolt is loose, move the ratchet and socket over to the adjustment bolt that is sticking out of the idler pulley. Turn the adjustment bolt counter-clockwise until the belt is loose. Once the belt is loose, pull the belt off of the idler pulley, the power steering pump pulley and the water pump pulley. Pull the engine out of the engine compartment. The middle alternator belt now can be accessed.

    4

Locate the adjustable idler pulley for the alternator belt. The alternator is located on the lower left-hand side of the engine, and the adjustable idler pulley for the alternator is located between the alternator and the crankshaft pulley.

    5

Loosen the bolt in the middle of the adjustable idler pulley for the alternator with a ratchet and a socket. Once the bolt is loose, move the ratchet and socket to the adjustment bolt that is sticking out of the idler pulley. Turn the adjustment bolt counterclockwise until the belt is loose. Once the belt is loose, pull the belt off the idler pulley, alternator pulley, crankshaft pulley and water pump pulley. Pull the engine out of the engine compartment.

    6

Route the new alternator belt around the same pulleys, including the adjustable idler pulley. Ensure the belt is centered around each pulley. Turn the adjustment bolt on the alternator idler pulley clockwise with the ratchet and socket to tighten the belt. Once the belt is tight, check the tension on the belt by pushing inward on the belt with your hand. The belt should have no more than one-half inch of deflection at its longest span. Once the belt is properly tensioned to one-half inch of deflection, tighten the bolt in the middle of the idler pulley.

    7

Route the old power steering pump belt around the same pulleys, including the adjustable idler pulley. Ensure the belt is centered around each pulley. Turn the adjustment bolt on the power steering pump idler pulley clockwise with the ratchet and socket to tighten the belt. Once the belt is tight, check the tension on the belt by pushing inward on the belt with your hand. The belt should have no more than one-half inch of deflection at its longest span. Once you've properly tensioned the belt, tighten the bolt in the middle of the idler pulley.

    8

Look over both belts to ensure they are properly seated within the pulleys. Crank the engine and let it run for about 30 seconds. Inspect the belt with the engine running to ensure the belts remain seated. Turn off the engine and recheck the tension on both belts with your hand. Adjust the belts if necessary to maintain the half-inch of deflection in the belts. Close the hood.
