Coded keys are also referred to as transponder keys and they are used in most new model vehicles. The key is equipped with a code personalized to your specific vehicle that makes it impossible to start the car without it. Having a transponder key made for your car is not something that is particularly difficult to do; but it is expensive. Most transponder keys cost between $100 to $200, depending on the vehicle make and model you drive. Should you lose your transponder key or simply need an additional key, contact the dealership where you purchased your vehicle or any dealership that manufactures your vehicle.
Instructions
- 1
Call or visit a dealership that specializes in your make vehicle. For example, if you drive a Lexus, you need to contact any Lexus dealership. When you pick up your new transponder key, you will have to provide your license and proof of ownership of the vehicle, such as the registration or insurance card, or the dealership will not provide you with a transponder key.
2Ask to speak with someone in the service department about obtaining a new coded -- or transponder -- key for your vehicle. Some dealerships have transponder keys available on-site, while others will need to place an order for you to get a transponder key for your car.
3Pay for your transponder key and take it home with you. Once you have the transponder key in your possession, you can program it to match the code in your car. The process takes only a few minutes.
4Insert one of your original keys into your vehicle ignition and turn the key to the "On" position for approximately five seconds before turning it back off.
5Remove the already coded key from the ignition and replace it with the new transponder key you obtained from the vehicle dealership. Turn the key to the "On" position for five seconds before turning it back off. Remove the newly programmed key.
