How to Change the Wiper Motor on a 1991 GMC S-15 Jimmy

GMC introduced the S-15 Jimmy SUV in 1983. The S-15 and its Chevrolet S-10 Blazer counterpart are based on the S-10 pickup. The 1991 S-15 Jimmy was powered by a 4.3-liter V-6 engine with throttle-body fuel injection and available in two- and four-wheel drive. The windshield wipers on the Jimmy are controlled by a single motor that is located on the cowl. Replacing the motor is well within the scope of the DIY mechanic.

Instructions

Removal

    1

Park the Jimmy on a level surface and set the parking brake.

    2

Pry the center caps from the wiper arms with a small flat-head screwdriver.

    3

Remove the nuts from the wiper arm shafts with a ratchet and socket. Place a piece of masking tape along the edge or at the end of the wiper blades as a reference point, so you can reinstall them in the same position. Remove the wiper arms from the shafts.

    4

Remove the screws from the upper edge of the cowl cover with a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the bolts from the lower edge of the cover with a ratchet and socket. Remove the rubber washer hose from the fitting on the cowl if present. Remove the cover.

    5

Disconnect the electrical connector from the wiper motor. Look inside the cowl and you will see the wiper linkage attached to the motor arm. Loosen but do not remove the two nuts on the linkage and disconnect the linkage from the ball on the motor arm.

    6

Remove the bolts that attach the motor to the cowl with a ratchet and socket. Remove the motor.

Installation

    7

Remove the nut from the motor arm shaft with a ratchet and socket and mount it on the new motor. Install the nut and torque it to 57 inch-pounds with an inch-pound torque wrench.

    8

Mount the motor on the cowl. Install the bolts and use an inch-pound torque wrench to torque the bolts to between 49 and 75 inch-pounds.

    9

Attach the linkage to the ball on the motor arm. Torque the nuts to 57 inch-pounds.

    10

Plug in the electrical connector. Mount the cowl cover and attach the rubber washer hose if present. Install and tighten the screws and bolts.

    11

Attach the wiper arms and nuts. Torque the nuts to 53 inch-pounds. Install the caps.
