How to Change the Oil on a 2006 GS 300

Changing the oil on a 2006 Lexus GS 300 should be accomplished every 3,000 miles to achieve the longest possible service life of the engine. Contamination of the oil can't be avoided: A cold engine will have condensation, as well as a poor seal at the rings when the engine is in a contracted state. Until normal temperature and corresponding expansion is achieved, compression pressure will bypass the yet contracted and loose rings. This compression consists of unburned fuel and spent exhaust gases, which mixes with the oil. This combination, when mixed with oil, forms particulates with mass, resulting in the dirty and somewhat gritty oil that you have come to be familiar with.

Instructions

    1

Apply the parking brake and raise the car, using the floor jack. Place jack stands under the sub-frame and lower the car so it rests on the stands. Place the drain pan under the oil pan. Remove the oil pan drain plug, using the ratchet and appropriate socket. Allow the oil to drain completely.

    2

Install the oil pan drain plug. Keep in mind that the thin oil pan only has two or three threads and will strip easily. Tighten the drain plug until it is snug. Move the drain pan so that it rests under the oil filter housing, located on the passenger's, bottom-front side of the engine.

    3

Open the oil filter box and withdraw the filter and associated components -- there should be a filter, two O-rings and a clear plastic piece. This piece is used to drain the oil filter housing of its oil prior to removing the filter, in order to prevent a massive oil spill.

    4

Remove the plug from the bottom of the oil filter housing, using a socket -- there will be very little or no loss of oil when the plug is removed. Install the clear plastic drain into the opening created by the removal of the filter drain plug. Thread it in clockwise. The small post in the center will open a drain when installed completely. Allow the oil to drain completely. Remove the plastic drain plug.

    5

Remove the oil filter housing, using a filter wrench to turn the housing counterclockwise. Lower the housing and drain the rest of the oil into the pan. Pull the paper filter out of the housing. Install the new paper oil filter in the housing.

    6

Remove the old O-ring from the top of the filter housing and replace it with the new one that accompanied the filter. Thread the filter housing clockwise to install it, and tighten it by hand as far as it will go.

    7

Remove the small O-ring from the bottom of the oil filter housing drain plug and replace it with the new one supplied with the filter. Install the filter housing drain plug and tighten it with the use of a socket until it is snug. Do not over-tighten it, or it will surely strip and never come off again. Lower the car to the ground.

    8

Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap from the top of the engine. Insert the funnel into the oil filler opening. Pour the 5 quarts of synthetic 5W30 oil into the engine. Replace the oil cap.
