How to Change the Low Beam Bulb in a 2006 Chevy Equinox

Do not be caught in the dark with a malfunctioning low-beam headlight in your Equinox sport utility vehicle. The low-beam and high-beam headlights in your 2006 Chevrolet Equinox are provided by a single bulb on each side of the truck, so when a low-beam burns out, the bulb must be replaced, regardless if the high-beam portion is still functioning. Some minor disassembly is required on the front of the vehicle.

Instructions

    1

Raise the hood and locate the eight fasteners that secure the top of the grill to the radiator cross-member. Pry up the fasteners carefully with a flat-head screwdriver.

    2

Grasp the grille and pull it away from the front of the truck. Carefully pull the trim bar -- which is part of the grill and is attached to the face of the headlight assemblies with a hidden retaining clip -- away from each of the headlights.

    3

Locate the three retaining screws on top of the headlight assembly. Remove the screws with a socket and ratchet wrench.

    4

Pull the front grill slightly away from the headlight, then carefully pull the headlight straight up and out of the vehicle. Use care as the wiring harness is still connected to the back side of the headlight assembly.

    5

Depress the clip on the electrical connector for the headlight bulb on the back side of the headlight. Pull the connector straight out of the headlight.

    6

Twist the bulb retaining ring on the back side of the headlight in a counterclockwise direction. Lift up the retaining ring and place it aside. Pull the bulb assembly straight out of the back of the headlight.

    7

Pull the headlight bulb straight out of the socket and discard it. Grasp a new 9007 halogen bulb by the base -- not the glass portion of the bulb -- and align the notches in the base of the bulb with the slots in the socket. Push the bulb into the socket until it is fully seated.

    8

Push the bulb assembly back into its cavity on the back side of the headlight. Position the retaining ring over the back side of the headlight and twist it in a clockwise direction until it locks into place. Push the electrical connector onto the back of the socket until it snaps into place.

    9

Pull out slightly on the grill and slide the headlight assembly back into position on the front of the truck. Replace the headlight retaining screws on top of the assembly and tighten them with a socket and ratchet wrench. Push the grill back against the front of the vehicle. Push in on the grill bars on each side of the truck until the hidden retaining clips engage. Push the eight grille fasteners back down by hand to secure the grill in place. Close the hood.
