Do it Yourself Windshield Replacement for a Mazda 626

Do it Yourself Windshield Replacement for a Mazda 626

The law requires replacement of a windshield for a crack that is larger than the size of a quarter. Your windshield is one of the major safety features of your car. A defective or improperly installed windshield can result in serious injury. If your Mazda 626 experiences a roll-over, the windshield will keep the car from collapsing. It is recommended that installation be done by a professional; but if you take your time and are thorough, you can do it yourself.

Instructions

    1

Check for windshield frame damage. The frame holding the window should be free of dents, cuts and corrosion. If there is damage to the windshield frame, have that repaired first. The new windshield will not bond correctly to a bent frame otherwise.

    2

Lay vinyl drop cloths across the hood of your Mazda and across the dashboard. Windshields are made of safety glass which can splinter into a thousand pieces if hit in the right spot.

    3

Remove the wiper blades and arms with a flat head screwdriver.

    4

Remove the gasket around the entire windshield. Use a flat head screwdriver to pry the gasket out while pulling on it.

    5

Cut the caulk around the windshield with a razor blade, cutting around the edge of the whole window. This will break the silicone seal, separating the windshield from the frame.

    6

Remove the windshield by inserting a crowbar under the windshield and gently lifting it out by a corner. Work your way around the whole windshield. Have an assistant help you lift it out of the frame.

    7

Prep the mounting surface and the new window. Use sandpaper to sand around the edge of the windshield frame. This will ensure proper contact with the bonding agent. Apply bonding agent to the entire mounting surface. Use sandpaper around the edge of the new windshield. The contact point of the new windshield needs to be rough for the bonding agent to work. Apply the bonding agent to the inside edge of the new windshield to ensure a water-tight seal.

    8

Lay a bead of caulk on the mounting surface around the edge of the entire window frame. Make sure there are no gaps.

    9

Position the new window into the frame with your assistant's help, making sure to firmly press it into place. After the bonding agent has set, replace the rubber gasket by pushing it into place by hand. Reinstall the windshield wipers and arms, then remove any excess silicone from the window and car.
