1991 Ford Mustang Starter Solenoid Installation

By 1991, the Ford Mustang was nearing the end of its third generation. Even though fuel economy concerns had impacted sales in the early 1980s, Ford wasn't about to give up on its pony car and redesigned the line in 1993 for the 1994 model year. The 1991 Mustang uses a Bendix-style, shimless starter to turn the flywheel and start the engine. The ignition circuit energizes the starter by sending power to it through the starter solenoid. If the solenoid fails, you'll need to replace it before you can drive your 1991 Ford Mustang again.

Instructions

    1

Remove the keys from the Mustang's ignition. Open the hood. Remove the negative battery cable from the battery using a battery wrench.

    2

Locate the starter solenoid on the left inner fender well. Remove the nut holding the positive wires to the starter solenoid using a socket wrench and 10 mm socket. Pull the wires off the solenoid, noting their order of attachment.

    3

Remove the push-on wiring connector and wires from the center of the solenoid by hand. Remove the nut holding the negative (starter side) wiring to the solenoid with the socket wrench and 10 mm socket. Remove the wires, noting their order of attachment.

    4

Remove the two bolts holding the starter solenoid to the inner fender using the socket wrench and 8 mm socket. Pull the old solenoid off and set it aside.

    5

Hold the new starter solenoid in place and thread the mounting bolts in by hand. Tighten the bolts until the bolt head touches the ear of the solenoid; do not over-tighten the mounting bolts as the solenoid case cracks easily.

    6

Put the negative wires onto the new solenoid in the same order you noted they occupied with the old solenoid. Tighten the nut onto the negative terminal with the socket and wrench.

    7

Reinstall the push-on wires by hand. Put the positive wires onto the new solenoid in the same order you noted they occupied with the old solenoid. Tighten the nut onto the positive terminal with the socket and wrench.

    8

Reconnect the Mustang's negative battery cable with the battery cable wrench. Close the hood.
