Windshield Removal for a 1966 Mustang

Windshield Removal for a 1966 Mustang

Removing the windshield on a classic 1966 Ford Mustang is not an easy task for one person; for best results, it should ideally be done with two people. The windshield is heavy, cumbersome and awkward to hold and maneuver, so a helper that stands on the outside of the car to aid windshield removal is not only a helpful choice but a safe one as well.

Instructions

    1

Remove the windshield wipers by pulling off the plastic tabs where the wiper arms meet the drive stem then unscrewing the center screw with a screwdriver. Pry each wiper off the drive stem splines and place them off to the side for reinstallation when the new window has been put on.

    2

Cut through the window seal with a hobby knife at either of the upper corners. The cut will need to be large enough to make a hole through the seal.

    3

Thread piano wire through the cut hole in the seal. Once it is started, have your helper pull it all the way through.

    4

Move along the entire seal and use the piano wire like a two person tree saw. Both you and your partner will pull in alternate strokes, moving around the entire windshield. This action will slice through the seal and release the window glass.

    5

Push the window outwards once the window has been freed from the seal. As one person pushes, the other person grabs an edge and gently peels the windshield away from the window frame. Always work in tandem: one pushes, and one pulls.
