How to Take the Door Panel Speakers Out of a 1999 Chevy Silverado

Replacing the door speakers in a 1999 Chevy Silverado is an easy process. If replacing the speakers with other than original equipment speakers, keep in mind that 6 3/4-inch speakers are needed to fit in the existing speaker openings. For the best sound with the original or aftermarket stereo, purchase speakers with the same ohms range. If its a 4-ohm system, the speakers must be 4-ohm or distortion will occur.

Instructions

    1

Roll the window down. Pull the triangular concealment cover over the outside rear view mirror attachment off the unit. It just has friction trim fasteners. Use the flat-head screwdriver to pop the small rectangular concealment cover out of the door panel directly above the armrest.

    2

Remove the concealment cover behind and around the inside door handle by simply pulling it out. Lift the window switch panel out of the door by hand. It is just snapped in place. Disconnect the electrical plugs behind the panel.

    3

Remove the Phillips screw in the bottom of the door panel with the screwdriver. Remove the screw in front of the door handle and the one below the window switch panel using the appropriate nut driver. Lift the door panel straight up to release the inverted hooks on the back of the door panel.

    4

Move the panel away from the door far enough to unplug the lower marker light. After disconnecting the plug, push the light out of the door panel to make installation easier. Push the tab on the rear side of the door lock switch, and push the whole switch through the panel outward toward the door. Leave it connected.

    5

Remove the door speaker by pushing down on the tab at the top of the speaker and withdrawing the speaker. Install the new speaker using the old connectors from the original speaker if they are compatible. If not, install new connectors on the original wires to accommodate the new speaker.

    6

Pull the wire connectors from the terminals on the old speaker. Remove the outside plastic-mounting ring from the speaker and transfer it to the new speaker. It just pulls off. Use the wire crimps to cut the ends off and strip a half-inch of insulation from the two speaker wires. Before removing the wires from the original speaker, make a note of the polarity on the wires. Note the positive and negative wire position.

    7

Install wire blade connectors on the two speaker wires and crimp them on tight with the wire crimps. Plug the connectors into the new speaker. Install the speaker into the speaker cavity in the door and push it in until the top tab snaps in place.

    8

Hold the door panel close to the door. Pull the lower marker light wire through its hole in the door. Install the door lock switch by pushing it into its location. Pull the window switch panel wiring through its vacant hole in the panel.

    9

Align the hooks on the rear of the door with the corresponding holes in the door and push the panel in and down. Install the Phillips screw in the bottom of the panel. Plug in the marker light and push it into the panel opening.

    10

Install the screws in front of the door handle and below the window switch panel. Plug in the window switch panel and push the panel into the door panel opening. Install the triangular outside mirror cover by pushing it on. Install the concealment covers behind the door handle and above the armrest. They simply snap into place.

    11

Repeat this process for the second in-door speaker.
