How to Replace the Water Pump in a Hyundai Sonata

The water pump is the heart of the Hyundai Sonata's cooling system, circulating the coolant. A faulty water pump can cause some serious damage to the engine of your Hyundai Sonata. Make sure to change out a bad water pump to keep your engine running smoothly.

Instructions

Remove the Old Pump

    Place a drain pan underneath the radiator. When the engine is cool, drain the cooling system from the radiator into the pan.

    Disconnect the negative battery cable.

    Remove the accessory drive belts, the bypass hose, if applicable and the radiator hose.

    Loosen an remove the water pump pulley bolts and remove the pulley.

    Take out the front cover, the timing belt and the alternator bracket.

    Loosen and remove the water pump bolts and remove the water pump from the engine. Make sure to take note where each bolt goes for reinstallation, as the bolts are various lengths.

Install the New Pump

    Place a new gasket and o-ring on the seal and install the new water pump, tightening the bolts to the following depending upon the engine in your Hyundai Sonata: 1
    .5L DOHC Engine - 14 to 20 foot pounds (20 to 27 Nm), 1.5L SOHC engine - 105 to 132 inch pounds (12 to 15 Nm), 1.6 DOHC engine - 14 to 20 foot pounds (20 to 27 Nm), 1.8L, 2.4L, 2.0L engines - 14 to 20 foot pounds (20 to 27 Nm) and 2.5 engine - 11 to 16 foot pounds (15 to 22 Nm).

    Reinstall the alternator bracket, the front cover with the timing belt, the water pump pulley, the radiator hose and bypass hose and the accessory drive belts.

    Reattach the negative battery cable.

    Refill the cooling system.

    Start the car and check for leaks when the engine reaches normal operating temperature.
