How to Repaint Aluminum Toppers

Aluminum toppers provide an inexpensive way to protect your truck from the elements. They are lightweight and easy to repair. If the paint on your aluminum topper is fading, it's easy to repaint. With a few items from your local hardware store and a dust-free workspace, you can repaint your aluminum toppers with a professional look. Repaint a topper before it rusts to extend its life.

Instructions

    1

Sand the surfaces of the aluminum topper with an electric sander. Remove all the old paint.

    2

Clean the surface with dish detergent and water. Use a sponge to remove all residue from the topper. Residue and dust leaves air bubbles when painted.

    3

Clean the work area. Remove all dust and debris from the work area.

    4

Paint a layer of primer using a spray brush. Primer helps the finish paint adhere to the aluminum. Let the primer dry for 12 hours.

    5

Paint a layer of paint onto the topper using a spray brush. Spray in an "S" pattern starting at the top and finishing at the bottom. Repeat this step twice for a brighter finish. Let the paint dry for 12 hours.
