How to Remove an Ignition Switch in a 2005 Ford F250

The ignition switch on a 2005 Ford F-250 is on the opposite side from the key tumbler on the steering column. Removing the switch is a relatively simple process that requires a minimum of tools. Care must be taken when separating the upper and lower steering column covers so that the plastic locking tabs are not broken in the process. Since the air bag wires are in the immediate vicinity, the SRS airbag system must be disabled.

Instructions

Removal

    1

Disable the air bag system by removing the negative battery cable with the use of an 8 mm socket and a ratchet. Allow 10 minutes for the systems to go to sleep before continuing.

    2

Turn the tilt steering column handle, if so equipped, counterclockwise until it has been removed completely. Remove the screws installed vertically in the steering column shroud directly under the ignition key, using a Phillips-head screwdriver.

    3

Separate the lower cover from the upper carefully, using the flat-head screwdriver to pry the left side halves apart first. Lower the bottom half of the cover and unplug the ignition switch.

    4

Remove the two bolts securing the switch to the column, using a socket and ratchet. Remove the switch.

Installation

    5

Install the switch and torque the two screws to between 47 and 64 inch-pounds. Plug the electrical connector into the switch.

    6

Install the lower half of the steering column cover. Install the tilt steering column handle.

    7

    Connect the negative battery cable.
