How to Remove Fans in 2002 BMW 530Is

The fans mounted in the engine bay on a 2002 BMW 530i help cool down both the radiator and the engine. These fans have clutches on them that control how fast the blades spin. If the clutch fails or if the fan blades break, then the fan needs to be removed from the engine. This process should take under an hour to perform, and requires the use of a few special tools.

Instructions

    1

Open the hood. Remove the trim panel around the radiator using the trim removal tool and the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Take the trim panel off of the core support.

    2

Unbolt the clamp on the alternator cooling hose with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, then pull the hose off of the alternator.

    3

Hold the water pump pulley steady with the thin gooseneck pliers. Unbolt the fan from the water pump pulley with the 32mm open-end wrench. Take the fan out of the engine bay.
