How to Remove a Distributor Cap and Rotor

If your SUV, truck or car begins to misfire or not start at all, it may be because the distributor and rotor need to be changed. The distributor and the distributor cap receive electric signals from the ignition system. This charge, in turn, fires off to the spark plugs, which send spark to your engine's cylinders, which starts your vehicle. Your distributor, rotor and distributor cap are basically encompassed in one part.

Instructions

    1

Raise the hood of your SUV, car or truck and prop it open. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

    2

Run your hand along the spark plug wires and follow them to the distributor cap.

    3

Remove the spark plug wires from the distributor cap. Pry the cap off, using a flat-head screwdriver if need be.

    4

Remove the retaining bolt holding the distributor in place, using your socket set. The rotor is inside the distributor. Pull the distributor off.
