Grease on the inside of a front tire, or on the transaxle case is a sign that you could have a torn CV boot on your 2005 Nissan Altima. You will need to pack the joint with grease and replace the boot. It's important to get a new boot on as soon as possible, so the CV joint doesn't get dirt and debris in it or become overheated from lack of lubrication. However, if you are hearing a clicking noise when you turn a corner, it's too late. The CV joint is damaged and needs to be replaced.

Park your Altima on a flat solid surface. Set the parking brake and block one of the rear wheels. Raise the vehicle with a floor jack. Position jack stands under a solid piece of frame on both sides of the vehicle. Lower the frame onto the jack stands.
2Cut the metal bands off both ends of the CV boot with diagonal cutters. Cut the boot from one end to the other. Slide the boot off of the CV joint. Clean any dirt or debris off of the CV joint.
3Pack the CV joint with the grease supplied in your boot kit. Open the split in the replacement boot and slide it over the joint. Push the screws through the holes and thread the nuts on. Tighten the nuts with a socket while holding against the screws with a Philips screwdriver.
4Wrap the bands provided in your kit around both ends of the boot. Slide the end of the band through the slot in the other end. Make sure the band is in the groove all the way around the boot. Pull it tight with pliers, fold it back over itself and fold down the tabs to hold it in place. Repeat this procedure for the other band.
5Clean any excess grease off the boot, axle and surrounding parts. Lift your Altima off of the jack stands. Remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle to the ground.
