How to Change the Cabin Air Filter in a 2001 Toyota Highlander

Toyota uses a cabin air filtration system to remove pollen, dust and debris from the air, before it enters the passenger compartment of 2001 Highlander. The keystone of this system is the cabin air filter. Located behind the glove box, the filter traps a wide variety of airborne debris before it makes its way in to the ductwork that feeds the interior vents. Toyota recommends replacing this filter every 30,000 miles, but it's best to inspect it more often and replace when you can no longer see light shining through it.

Instructions

    1

Open the Highlander's glove box to expose the retaining arm on the side of the glove box. Remove the screw that holds the retaining arm to the side of the glove box, using a screwdriver. Pull the retaining arm off the retaining arm stud.

    2

Lower the glove box the rest of the way to expose the cabin air filter compartment.

    3

Push the tabs in on the side of the cabin air filter compartment door to release the door. Remove the door from the compartment and set it aside.

    4

Slide the old cabin air filter out of the Highlander's cabin air filter compartment. Slide the new cabin air filter into the cabin air filter compartment, making sure the arrow on the filter frame points up.

    5

Reinstall the air filter compartment door. Swing the glove box back into place.

    6

Lift the retaining arm up and slide it onto the retaining arm stud. Reinstall the retaining arm screw, using the screwdriver. Close the glove box.
