How to Bleed the Brakes on a 2004 Chevy Aveo

The necessity to bleed the brakes on a 2004 Chevy Aveo is caused by either the replacement of parts or a leak within the system. Air in the brake system results in a spongy brake pedal; one that requires more travel than normal to stop. Frozen brake caliper slider-bolts will also show the same symptoms. If the caliper is incapable of sliding on the slider-bolts due to corrosion, it will require much more pressure on the brake pedal to stop.

Instructions

    1

Open the hood and remove the cap on the master cylinder reservoir. Check and fill the reservoir with brake fluid as necessary to bring it up to a proper level. Re-install the cap. Raise the car with the floor jack, and place jack stands under the side jacking points. Lower the car so it rests on the stands.

    2

Ask a helper to pump the brake pedal three times and leave the pedal up on the third time. When you open the bleeder screw on a wheel, ask the helper to push the brake pedal to the floor and hold it there. Meanwhile, close the bleeder screw. When the bleeder screw is closed, and only then, ask the helper to pump the brake pedal three more times and, on the third pump, leave the pedal up. Repeat the process of opening the bleeder screw and have the helper push the pedal to the floor again, and so it goes until all the brakes have been bled. The reason for keeping the pedal down until the bleeder screw is closed is that lifting the pedal with the bleeder screw open would suck air back into the system.

    3

Open the bleeder screw on the right rear brake cylinder using a line wrench. The brakes must be bled in a particular order, the right rear, left front, left rear and right front.

    4

Press the brake pedal to the floor. Close the bleeder screw snuggly with the line wrench. Pump the brake pedal three times and leave the pedal up. Continue this process until a steady stream of brake fluid emerges from the brake cylinder. Always check the brake fluid level before proceeding to the next wheel.

    5

Lower the car from the jack stands. Check the master cylinder reservoir one more time when the bleeding process is finished and fill as necessary to the proper level. Replace the cap.
