How to Wire Your 2000 Tahoe Z71's Stereo

Reinstalling the factory stereo for your 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe Z71, after removing an aftermarket substitute or performing certain dashboard-related repairs, will restore the vehicle's audio system to original working order. Although the original factory unit requires several individual electrical connections to work correctly, wiring the unit to your vehicle is a straightforward process that can be performed without extensive automotive repair experience.

Instructions

Removal

    1

Open the vehicle's hood and disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery's - terminal, using a socket and a ratchet.

    2

Adjust the steering wheel to the lowest position.

    3

Examine the top-left area of the dash panel bezel, above the driver's side vent, and locate the gap between the bezel and upper dashboard. Grasp the upper-left side portion of the dash panel bezel with your hands and separate it from the dash, using your hands.

    4

Continue separating the perimeter of the dash panel bezel from the dashboard, moving from the left to the right side, until the piece is totally separated.

    5

Disconnect the headlight and accessory connectors from the rear of the dash panel bezel. Remove the bezel from the vehicle and set it to the side.

    6

Examine the sides of the stereo unit and locate the two black plastic retainer levers. Depress the levers with your fingers, while pulling the unit out of the dash opening.

    7

Disconnect the harness connector from the rear of the stereo unit. Disconnect the antenna cable from the stereo to free the unit from the vehicle.

Installation

    8

Connect the vehicle's audio harness connector to the rear of the stereo unit. The connector is designed to only connect to the rear of the unit in the correct manner, eliminating the possibility of reversing the connection.

    9

Connect the antenna cable to the rear of the unit; slide the unit into the dash opening. When installed correctly, the locking levers will engage, preventing the unit from sliding out.

    10

Reconnect the headlight connector to the rear of the headlight switch, located behind the dash panel bezel, along with the remaining accessory connectors.

    11

Align the dash panel bezel with the dash. Press-fit the bezel to the dash, using your hands.

    12

Adjust the steering wheel column to the desired position.

    13

Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery's - terminal to finish the installation process, using a socket and a ratchet.
