How to Fix the Thermostat in a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am

If you need to fix the thermostat in your 1999 Pontiac Grand Am, there are some basic automotive tools required to complete the job. Not only are the tools relatively inexpensive, the parts needed to replace the thermostat are also reasonably priced. Moreover, replacing the thermostat is a simple procedure and a good learning experience for the beginner mechanic who won't have to rely on professional help to get the job done.

Instructions

    1

Locate the thermostat housing by tracing the radiator hose from the radiator to the location where it connects to the intake manifold of the Pontiac. Remove the radiator hose by loosening the band clamp with a screwdriver. Pull the hose off the thermostat housing.

    2

Remove the bolts that secure the housing to the intake manifold with a wrench. The thermostat housing is reused so do not discard it.

    3

Pull the old thermostat out of the Pontiac's intake by lifting upward on it. Place the new thermostat into place. The end marked "Top" must stick out of the intake for the engine to cool properly.

    4

Lift the old thermostat gasket off the intake manifold and replace it with a new one.

    5

Bolt the thermostat housing back onto the intake manifold.

    6

Secure the radiator hose by tightening the band clamp.
