How to Fix Scratches on Plastic Auto Bodies

No matter how careful you are driving and parking your car, there's no guarantee you'll be able to keep it in pristine condition. For example, scratches on plastic parts of the auto body, such as the bumper, are strikingly easy to get and can be quite an eyesore. While you can still fix these issues yourself, the days of using body filler and spray paint are over because the plastic of modern cars requires a different approach.

Instructions

    1

Spray the scratches with a generous amount of plastic prep solvent. Wipe the area down with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove caked-in dirt and grease and to promote adhesion. Rinse the area off well.

    2

Attach a rotary file to a hand-held drill. Scuff the scratched area to promote better adhesion.

    3

Mix equal amounts of hardener and repair adhesive on a paper plate with a paint stirrer. Spread a light coat of the mixed hardener and adhesive over the scratched area with a squeegee. Allow it to dry for 20 minutes.

    4

Install a piece of 80-grit waterproof sandpaper on a rubber block and run it over the dried adhesive and hardener. Repeat with 120-grit sandpaper and then 400-grit sandpaper.

    5

Wipe down the area with a tack cloth to remove the dust. Spray on a coat of auto body primer. Allow the primer to dry overnight. Spray on a color of auto body paint in the exact shade of your car. Allow the color to dry overnight and apply a second coat, also allowing it to dry overnight.
