How to Change a Throttle Position Sensor for a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Jeep Grand Cherokee was introduced in 1993. The 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo base model had two-wheel drive, and was equipped with a 4.0-liter V-6 engine. The upscale 2003 Grand Cherokee Limited and Overland were equipped with either a 4.7-liter DOHC engine or a 4.7-liter SOHC engine. The throttle position sensor or TPS on the 2003 Grand Cherokee is responsible for sending a signal to the ignition control module or engine control computer. The timing and fuel-to-air ratio are adjusted based upon the signal from the throttle position sensor.

Instructions

    1

Open the hood of the Grand Cherokee. Remove the lid of the air filter housing by depressing the lock tabs with your fingers. Loosen the air intake hose from the throttle body, using a flat-head screwdriver. Remove the air intake hose from the throttle body to expose the throttle body components.

    2

Remove the electrical connector from the back of the TPS, using a flat-head screwdriver if necessary to loosen the lock tab. The TPS is located on the inboard side of the throttle body, nearest the upper intake plenum. Remove the TPS mounting bolts from the throttle body, using an open end wrench. Remove the TPS from the throttle body by gently pulling it out horizontally.

    3

Install the new TPS into the throttle body gently. Install the mounting bolts and tighten them until they are snug with the open end wrench. Do not over-tighten the bolts, or you will break the TPS body or mounting tabs. The proper torque specifications for this part calls for only 5 foot-pounds of torque. Install the electrical connector onto the new TPS, and press it on gently until the locking tab clicks in place.

    4

Push the throttle lever on the throttle body a few times, to make sure the TPS is not binding in the throttle body.

    5

Install the air intake hose onto the throttle body, and tighten the clamp snug with the flat-head screwdriver. Install the air filter housing lid and push the lid downward until the locking tabs click in place.
