How to Change the Ignition Tumbler on a 1968 Mustang

By 1968, Ford's pony car had been refined a bit. Big-block engines were available, suspensions were improved and interiors were more luxurious. Even with all these changes, from outward appearances the 1968 model was still recognizable to most as a Mustang. Since even late-1960's Mustangs are over 40 years old, parts wear out. The tumblers in the ignition switch cylinder are no exception, though parts are still readily available as of 2011 and are easily changed.

Instructions

    1

Insert the key into the ignition switch.

    2

Turn the key to the accessory position on the switch.

    3

Straighten one end of a paper clip. Insert the paper clip into the small hole at the base of the key way in the face of the ignition switch to activate the spring-loaded release.

    4

Push the paper clip gently inwards while turning the key to the nine o'clock position. Note that the paper clip will be at the three o'clock position.

    5

Pull the key and the ignition lock cylinder out of the ignition switch.

    6

Insert the key into the replacement lock cylinder.

    7

Insert the cylinder and key assembly into the ignition switch with the small hole in the face of the cylinder pointing at the three o'clock position.

    8

Turn the key and cylinder in a clockwise direction until the cylinder locks into place. Test the operation of the switch and key.
